Text Box: At Christmastime, 1989, the Whitings invited a number of their neighbors to their house for dinner and an evening of good time. As usual at the Whitings, the evening included a lot of singing. The following poem by Barbara Roll, documenting that evening, was written for the tenth anniversary of the Eastmanaires.
We were invited to the Whitings in December 1989.
We came to wine, dine, and bring toys for children at the same time.
Food was delicious, company great,
And being younger then, we could stay out late!
As no party at Joanie’s is complete without song,
We headed downstairs for a sing-a-long.
We had to go down to the upright – no grand piano then,
And it was quite a squeeze to get us all in the den.
Joanie had written a ditty-
A take-off on Jingle Bells: easy to sing and witty.
A few of us started the sing
But soon everybody joined in;
Even the Whitings’ dog, Josh, sang too –
He and Dick did their Reindeer duo.
It was decided that night; a singing group would be fun!
And with Jonnie as Director – it could be done.
And that is where the idea for the Eastmanaires came from!!!
The following Christmas season the Eastmanaires were formed.
November 5th, 1990 – First meeting in the Whitings’ home for Eastmanites interesting in forming a choral group.
November 19th, 1990 – First rehearsal of the Eastmanaires at Tallulah’s (a meeting place at the old Eastman South Cove facility) with 23 attendees.
December 16th, 1990 – First concert at Harvey’s (the restaurant at the old Eastman golf center) followed by caroling to Eastman shut-ins.
December 22nd, 1990 – Concert at the Clough Center at New London Hospital.
In 1991, the Eastmanaires added a summer patriotic concert as part of the Fourth of July celebration.
In 1992, the Eastmanaires added many other concerts.
In recent years, the Eastmanaires have prepared three programs: Christmas, Spring, and Summer/Patriotic. Each season the concerts are performed at various venues including: The Center at Eastman in the Draper Room, Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Lebanon, South Cove in Eastman, various nursing homes, and anywhere else they have been invited.
